With the use of NGS technology, pathogens can be isolated and researchers can detect pathogens directly from samples such as blood and CSF. Results are obtained rapidly with extreme accuracy, allowing better-informed treatment decisions. The sequence information obtained by NGS is also used to develop specific primers for PCR-based assays, to provide more complete sequence information for MLST assays, and to develop other specific field tests.

The private spaceflight company SpaceX wants to launch astronauts into space in the coming years, and it will enter the final frontier with an innovative technology: 3D printing. SpaceX sent its first 3D-printed part into space early this year. The part, a rocket engine main oxidizer valve, flew aboard SpaceX's Jan. 6 launch of a Falcon 9 rocket carrying the commercial Thaicom 6 telecommunications satellite to orbit. This mission marked the first time SpaceX had ever flown a 3D-printed part with the valve operating successfully with high-pressure liquid oxygen, under cryogenic temperatures and high vibration.

Faurecia, a French interior supplier partly owned by Peugeot Citroen, wants to be the first out of the gate with new and innovative interiors for the self-driving car. Faurecia is working on an "active wellness" seat, which employs biometric sensors and predictive analytics to measure and respond to occupant stress, drowsiness and other symptoms, according to Rob Huber, vice president of innovation and ventures. The company also is experimenting with ways to blend voice recognition and gesture controls with advanced lighting, audio and control systems.
